    The ABC’s of Kindergarten

     ~ Mrs.  Miller ~

A -    If your student is absent from school, please send a note on the day he or she returns to school.  If you know that your student will be absent, please let me know in advance.  Please remember that your student’s attendance is very important.

B -    Our classroom behavior plan consists of multiple positive reinforcement tools. Your child will come home with a color face every day. Please make sure to look at the folder and see how your student’s day went. Parents are expected to sign the folder daily. .

Your child’s birthday is so important! Our class would love to celebrate with your child. Please remember that all food items brought to class must be store bought. Also, we serve birthday treats at the end of the day, preferably at 3pm. You may drop off the treats in the office or obtain a visitor’s badge and bring them to our classroom.

C -    If you need to schedule a conference with me, I am available Monday – Friday, 12:45-1:30pm. The best way to reach me is by email: laurenmiller@littleelmisd.net.

Class Dojo is a behavior management system that we use in our classroom to help us make great choices throughout the day.  Once you accept your invitation, you will have access to points given and taken due to good and poor choices.  Class Dojo also serves as a communication tool.  I post photos from our school day activities, and you may also message me directly.

D -    Be sure that your student dresses appropriately.  Our classroom is a busy place that sometimes gets messy.  The dress code can be found in the LEISD Student Handbook.  A few important things to remember:

1.) If your student wears something other than tennis shoes, you will need to send a pair in your student’s backpack for P.E. on Monday and Tuesday.

2.) We have (4) recesses, tennis shoes are encouraged but not required. Be sure to send a jacket with child during the cooler months, as we will go outside for play.

E -    There will be a few days throughout the year when our district will have Early Release.  I will try my best to remind you when these days will occur. Please also check our district calendar.

F -    Your student will be bring his or her folder home EACH DAY.  Please make it a habit to check and sign the calendar daily. I will check the folders each morning, so it is very important that your student’s folder be checked and signed. You may also write notes to me inside your child’s folder, just be sure to label the day of your note with the word ‘note’, so that I know to look in the back of the folder.

G -    Our kindergarten students will receive number grades on their report cards.  3 – Meets or Exceeds State Standards

2 – Progress being made towards meeting State Standards

1 – Area of concern; Student not making progress

Your child will have a guided reading book bag that will be sent home every day. They will need to bring this book bag back to school every day! Please practice reading all books daily.

H -    LEISD Student Handbooks are located online.  Please make sure you have looked over the rules and procedures.

We do not give homework in Kindergarten at Oak Point Elementary. Please speak with me for any questions or concerns.

I -     I am excited to have your child in my Kindergarten class.  We will have a fantastic year!!! Since they have stepped foot through my door, they are affectionally known as “my babies”. I can’t wait to share this school year with your family!

J -    There are many special jobs in our classroom.  Some include Line Leader, Teacher Helper, Messenger, Table Leaders, etc.  These jobs will be given to different students each week.

K -    Our Kindergarten Curriculum follows the Texas Essential Knowledge and & Skills (TEKS) to ensure that our students are gaining all of the essential knowledge needed.  You may view the TEKS at http://www.tea.state.tx.us/

L -     We will visit the library once a week. Your student will check out books every week during this time.  Checked out books will remain in our classroom at the beginning of the year, so that we can learn the proper rules with our library books. At the end of the year, we will practice taking our books home.  Please make sure all books are returned as your child will not be able to check out another book and you run the risk of paying for a lost library book. If you would like to come to the library and check out books, you may come see the librarian.

M -   Our cafeteria lunch menu can be found online on our school’s website.  Simply scroll down to the bottom and select lunch menu.  Our lunch is 10:30-11:00am.  Lunch money can be sent to school with your child in their daily folder or paid by the parent in the cafeteria or online.

N -    Each week you will be receiving important news and completed work in your child’s Tuesday Folder.  This folder is provided by the school and yours to keep at the end of the year.  This news may come from the office or me.  Your student will be receiving our classroom newsletter each week. Please make sure to check your student’s folder, so that you can stay informed of news, events and completed work. Please remove all forms sent on Tuesday and return the folder on Wednesday.

O -    I will send book orders home throughout the school year.  The books are offered at a reasonable rate and are great ways to encourage reading!  We will also have Fall and Spring Book Fairs in the library. Check dojo for information on book fair dates.

P -     We will have a few parties this year, including a Winter Party in December, Valentine’s Party in February, and an End of the Year Party on the last day of school! Any parent volunteers would be greatly appreciated. I typically send a link through SignUpGenius.

Q -    Students will be given a chance for a little quiet time to read books.  This will happen during anytime of the day. It’s important that we learn in Kindergarten how to read pictures and words. Please encourage this at home.

R -    I am continuously monitoring your student’s progress.  Every nine weeks you will receive your student’s Academic Growth Report (more commonly known as a report card).  It is to be signed and returned the following school day.  You will also receive 1 progress reports within each 9 week period.  Please sign, return and write any questions/concerns that you may have.

We participate in the LiiNK project, where we have 4 receses daily.  To learn more about the program, please our district website and select LiiNK project.

S -    Each afternoon we will have a snack time. Please remember to pack a snack for your student every day. It should be something quick, easy, and not too messy to eat.  Please do not send candy, cake, sodas, etc.  Please send a healthy snack, such as crackers, carrot sticks, a granola bar, etc. Water is the only acceptable drink in our classroom during snack time.

T -    At the beginning of the year, an information sheet is filled out so that I know important info about your student.  One of the most important items is transportation for your student.  If for any reason your student’s mode of transportation should change (even for one day), I must have the changes in writing. This is simply a safety procedure to ensure that your student gets home safely.  If the change is last minute, you must call the front office and they will let me know.  The cut-off time to inform the office of a day change is 2:00pm.

The school doors open at 7:35a.m.  At that time, all Kindergarten students must report to the cafeteria to eat breakfast or wait to be picked up by their teacher. The tardy bell rings at 8:05a.m.  Students who arrive after 8:05a.m. must report to the office to receive a tardy slip.  Kindergarten dismissal is at 3:40 p.m.  If you will be picking your student up early, you must go to the front office to sign your student out.

U -    I am very understanding!  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by email: laurenmiller@littlelemisd.net. My conference time is 12:45-1:30pm. Please let me know if you want to set up an appointment.

V -    There will be opportunities for parents to volunteer in the classroom!  If you would like to volunteer, please let me know. You will also need to fill out a background check form online.

If you are planning on visiting the school for any reason, please sign-in at the front office to get a visitor’s badge. You will also need to sign-out when you leave. Thank you for helping to keep our students safe!

W -   Please send your child with a labeled water bottle daily.  This helps with the traffic to the water fountain, and it helps to keep your child hydrated with (4) recesses.  We refill our water bottles inside the classroom.  If you have any unused water bottles that you’d like to donate to our classroom for students that do not have one, please send it with your child and label it as extra.  The extra water bottle will be given to the student and not returned to you. We keep our water bottles at school until Friday, so that we don’t forget them.

Our kindergarteners will learn word wall words or popcorn words.  These are sight words that students are expected to recognize and spell to get ready for 1st grade!  Please practice the words with your student every night!

X -    We will have some “X-tra” special days this year including field trips, Field Day, and many more!

Y -    Please remember that we do not want to spread any yucky germs.  If your student is sick, please keep them at home until they are well.  Your student needs to be fever free for 24 hours before he/she can return to school.

Z -    We will be extremely busy this year.  Please make sure that your student gets plenty of “Zzzzzzzz’s” each night!
