Mrs. Heather Garrett

I am very fortunate to be working in my dream job!  I love sophomore English because of the persuasive writing - my background is in philosophy, linguistics, literature & the humanities.  I enjoy teaching my students about the purest form of argumentation, and I'll inevitably end up using all of my AVID strategies (Socratic Seminar, Philosophical Chairs, One Pagers, Sketch Notes, etc.).  I've taken over OnRamps Rhetoric this year and I'm so happy to have some of my kiddos back for another year of argumentation.  Our topics are interesting, timely, & relevant.  This'll be an awesome class.

I'm pleased to be the English II team lead; my team is full of wonderful & dedicated teachers!  I also coach UIL Literary Criticism and I'm the Senior Class Sponsor (GO 2021 LOBOS!!).  My room is always extremely busy, but I'll definitely make time to speak to anyone that needs my help.  I LOVE questions, which is quite odd.  Then again, no one ever accused me of normalcy.

Any biography of me must include my amazingly talented husband, Jason, and our fantastic tiny human, Elora.  They are the ones who support me in everything I do, and they are the best and most important people in my life.  They are also incredibly patient when I have to grade essays all night!  I am lucky to have them in my life and I talk about them all the time.  Jason is an artist in multiple mediums and is going back to school to get his degree, specializing in sculpture.  For the last four years, he's been a stay at home dad for our girl - all of her awesomeness is totally his fault (especially her tendency to sing everything she does).  Elora is in Kindergarten this year and she's just about the coolest kid in the entire world.  Biased?  You betcha.  Jason will be completing his coursework from home this year so that he can assist Elora with at-home learning for Kindergarten.  He's amazing.  <3

I'm going to be VERY clear about COVID protocols this year.  I have two high risk people living in my house and their health is incredibly important to me.  Also, I have some news - I'm pregnant!  I'm due in early March, so I cannot be messing around and possibly getting sick.  It's terrible to not be able to high five and hug my kiddos, but I don't have a choice; I need to stay safe for myself and our growing family.  It'll be an odd year, but we're going to get through this together.
