Dr. Jeffrey C. Mathews

Dr. Jeff Mathews is a band director at Strike Middle School. He is a trombone player and trap set drummer.
 
After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern State University, Dr. Mathews taught high school band for seven years in the public schools of Louisiana and Texas. Dr. Mathews received the Master of Music Education degree from the University of North Texas, where he served as a Teaching Fellow. He continued his studies with Thomas Fraschillo at the University of Southern Mississippi where he earned the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in conducting pedagogy. Before joining the faculty at Strike Middle School, Dr. Mathews served on the faculty of Northwestern State University for 23 years where was the Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music.
 
His ensembles at Northwestern State have been selected to perform at the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles International Conference in Spain and at the Southern Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association. While under his leadership, the "Spirit of Northwestern" marching band, with its 342 members, became the largest marching band in the state of Louisiana.
 
While at NSU Dr. Mathews served as Assistant Director of Bands, Director of Athletic Bands, Director of Student Activities and Organizations, and Associate Director of Bands. He has taught Band, Marching Band Techniques, Music Theory, Conducting, and Music Education. His writings have been published by the Journal of Band Research and he has presented clinics at the Louisiana Music Educators Association Convention and the Texas Music Educators Association Convention.
 
He is also a regular guest conductor with the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra in the United Kingdom with whom he has recorded six compact disks. Dr. Mathews served for 15 years as the Commander and Conductor of the Texas Air National Guard Band. He led this band on a tour of the Czech Republic during the summer of 1999 and to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2007. In 2011, he was appointed Chief, Air National Guard Bands. In this capacity, he advises, directs policy, and provides budgets for all the Air National Guard Bands in the United States. From November of 2018 to May of 2019, Dr. Mathews served as the commander and conductor of the United States Air Force Band of the West based at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Mathews and his wife Kristine Coreil have two daughters, Devon and Lauren. Both are enjoying the college life. He is an avid golfer and voracious reader of spy novels.

Dr. Mathews is a member of the Texas Bandmasters Association, the Texas Music Educators Association, the College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles.
