LEISD School Board Approves Renaming of Zellars Center and Lakeside Middle School
November 16, 2021
Monday evening, The Board of Trustees approved the naming of two facilities: Zellars Center for Learning and Leadership and Lakeside Middle School.
Daniel Gallagher, superintendent, brought the name suggestions based on a community survey that was shared at the beginning of the school year. "We are asking the board to finalize the names so we can move forward with the appropriate signage for each of these buildings," said Gallagher.
Trustee Dan Blackwood opened the conversation by stating, "I am basing the motion on the response we received from the community, therefore I make a motion to rename it the Herschel Zellars Early Childhood Learning Center," he said.
Board President David Montemayor thanked the community for voicing their thoughts about a name that has historical meaning in the District. "It's funny how times change, people change, but because I wasn't here back then, I don't understand the importance of the name, and I don't want to take that away from our community," he said. Trustees unanimously passed the motion.
Trustee Jason Olson made a motion to change the Lakeside Middle School building to the Little Elm Independent School District Administration Building. Trustees unanimously passed the motion.
Currently, the Little Elm ISD Admin building is under construction and will be ready in early spring. Then the conversion to turn Zellars into a PreK campus will begin. These recommendations were made based on community input from a survey the District shared at the beginning of the school year.
