Community Engagement Fosters Educational Success

October 18, 2018

According to a recent policy brief from the National Education Association, "when schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs."

Little Elm ISD values creating a community where every student loves to learn and embracing all of our kids as all of our kids. That couldn't be more true at Hackberry Elementary. "I was visiting the Hackberry campus this week and as I was walking the halls with the principal secretary, I noticed a gentleman sitting at a table with two students," said Cecelia Jones, director for Communications. "He was there tutoring students in math and I stopped to thank him for helping our students. What I learned from his was fascinating."

Paul Krotosky and his wife are Frisco Lakes residents. They moved to Texas two years ago from New Jersey. They have no children in the District or grandchildren. "I am here because I want to give back to the community," said Paul.

Krotosky is a retired public educator of 44 years. He spent his time as a counselor and director for guidance for the largest high school in New Jersey. He spent a short time as a college professor teaching math. "Today, I am helping these kids understand decimals and time tables. I have never taught elementary school, so this has been fun and Hackberry is a nice school," he said.

Every Tuesday, Krotosky tutors students in math, and his wife helps in the library. They do it because it gives them a sense of community. "It is nice to see the community rallying behind our kids to help them be successful. But this story is very touching to my heart because you have two people who do it because they care about the students in their community. That is special," said Jones.
