Social Studies

Our Social Studies transfer goals describe what we expect students to be able to do independently with their learning. These goals focus on applying knowledge and skills beyond the classroom so that students can think critically, make informed decisions, and actively participate as responsible citizens in their communities and the world.

• TG1 Examine a series of events by applying absolute and relative chronology to make meaning of a time period or era.
• TG2 Identify and summarize the main idea and supporting evidence for a given text, topic, or issue.
• TG 3 Access and analyze primary and secondary texts to determine reliability, accuracy, and perspective.
• TG 4 Communicate information and ideas (e.g., writing, speaking, visuals, media, political cartoons) for a target audience using appropriate tone, terminology, and details.
• TG 5 Pose and pursue historical, political, cultural, economic and geographic questions to better understand the world around us.
• TG 6 Evaluate how individuals and groups influence, inspire or shape societies over time.
• TG 7 Examine how physical and human geography impacts culture, conflict, power, and trade. 
• TG 8 Given an issue, use critical thinking and decision making skills to better understand the problem and gather information about possible solutions to advocate for a course of action
• TG 9 Engage in respectful discourse to exchange and synthesize information, ideas, and points of view in order to inform one’s own perspective.

In our Social Studies classrooms, teachers are encouraged to create instruction which-

• Encourage authentic reading, writing, and inquiry.
• Activate prior knowledge and connect new learning to real-world contexts.
• Use primary/secondary sources and student-led dialogue to deepen understanding.
• Make thinking visible through graphic organizers and checks for understanding.
• Integrate technology to enhance learning experiences.
