College Readiness—Redefined at Little Elm High School

Many high schools have counselors who schedule time with junior and senior students to assist them with college applications, testing timelines, and financial aid workshops.

But at Little Elm High School (LEHS), College Readiness is more than that. It also means building meaningful partnerships that create real opportunities for students.

This week, nine LEHS seniors were offered merit scholarships to Southern Illinois University—and senior Julissa Lopez was surprised with a full-ride Chancellor Scholarship worth more than $100,000.

Moments like this reflect preparation, strong relationships, and a commitment to connecting students with the right opportunities.

How the Opportunity Took Shape

Little Elm ISD’s District College Coordinator, Keisha Brown, works closely with colleges and universities throughout Texas and beyond. As a former college admissions officer, she understands how institutions evaluate applications and what makes students competitive.

Through her involvement with the Dallas Area DFW Admissions Regional Network—a community of admissions professionals representing nonprofit colleges across Texas and outside the state—LEHS students benefit from direct connections with decision-makers.

During a recent professional conversation, Ms. Brown learned that SIU had been awarding scholarships to students in other Texas districts. That conversation led to an introduction, a campus visit, and discussions about how LEHS students might be a strong fit.

From there, the work shifted to preparation.

Thirteen LEHS seniors met the academic qualifications for the prestigious Chancellor Scholarship with an unweighted GPA of 3.8 or higher. Five students chose to apply for the full-ride award. Applications were reviewed, essays refined, and students supported through the process.

The result:

• Nine seniors earned merit scholarships to SIU.

• Julissa Lopez received the full-ride Chancellor Scholarship.

What Makes Our College Readiness Different

College readiness at LEHS goes beyond meeting graduation requirements. It includes intentional exposure to universities, direct access to admissions professionals, and guidance through competitive scholarship processes.

Through ongoing relationships with institutions such as:

• Midwestern State University

• Texas A&M University

• University of Texas at Arlington

• Along with numerous HBCUs and out-of-state universities

Students are introduced to a wide range of postsecondary pathways. The difference isn’t about size or location. It’s about ensuring students are prepared, informed, and connected.

This week’s scholarship announcements are a strong example of what can happen when preparation meets opportunity—and when students are supported by educators who are committed to helping them reach their goals.

At LEHS, college readiness is not a one-time event. It’s an ongoing effort to open doors and help students walk confidently through them.
